GLAUCOMA – SILENT THIEF OF SIGHT

Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma Surgery Proces

The human eye contains a clear fluid that is constantly produced and drained, maintaining a balanced amount to keep the eye functioning properly. However, in case the drainage pathway for this fluid becomes blocked, the fluid gradually keeps building up, thus increasing pressure inside the eye. Over time, this elevated pressure can damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and, in severe cases, irreversible blindness. This condition is referred to as Glaucoma, which is considered as the silent thief of sight. What makes it particularly dangerous is that nearly half of those affected are unaware they have it, as symptoms often remain unnoticed until the disease reaches an advanced stage.

Early detection of glaucoma is crucial to prevent further vision loss and protect your eyesight. At Sohana Eye Hospital, we are dedicated to offering cutting-edge and effective glaucoma treatments.

CAUSES OF GLAUCOMA

  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Age (risk increases after 40)
  • Increased intraocular pressure
  • Severe myopia or hyperopia
  • Previous eye trauma or injury
  • Long-term steroid use
  • Medical conditions such as diabetes, BP
  • Ethnicity (higher risk for Asian descent)
  • Other eye conditions like tumors or inflammation

SYMPTOMS OF GLAUCOMA

  • Early stages: No noticeable symptoms
  • Gradual loss of peripheral vision
  • Tunnel vision in the advanced stages
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Sudden blurred vision
  • Halos around lights
  • Severe pain in the eyes
  • Excessive tears and redness in eyes

MEDICATION FOR GLAUCOMA

Medications, such as eye drops or oral medicines, are often the first line of defence against glaucoma. These treatments work by reducing intraocular pressure, which is the primary cause of optic nerve damage in glaucoma.

How it works: Some eye drops are given to reduce the amount of fluid your eye makes and some are prescribed to help the fluid drain better.

What to expect: You will have to use the drops daily as prescribed by your doctor. Consistency is the key.

Our specialists will carefully prescribe the right medication for your condition and guide you on proper usage to ensure the best outcomes.

LASER TREATMENT FOR GLAUCOMA

Laser eye surgery for glaucoma helps by either opening up the blocked drainage tubes or by reducing the amount of fluid produced in the eye. Before the procedure, anesthetic eye drops are applied to numb the eye. This is to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort during the treatment.

Our Laser Treatment Options:

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT): This treatment uses targeted laser pulses to stimulate the drainage channels in the eye. By activating these cells, it helps in clearing out the debris and improving fluid outflow. This ultimately lowers the eye pressure.

YAG Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (PI): This procedure is specifically designed for angle-closure glaucoma. It works by creating a small channel in the iris to open up the drainage angle. By doing so, it prevents the condition from worsening further.

Cyclophotocoagulation: This laser treatment reduces the amount of fluid your eye produces. It is usually done in more advanced cases.

All these laser therapies are quick, painless, and often performed as a daycare procedure.

GLAUCOMA SURGERY

In case the eye drops and laser surgery are ineffective, surgery is then advised to manage glaucoma effectively.

Trabeculectomy: Trabeculectomy is the traditional surgical procedure for glaucoma where the surgeon creates a tunnel that allows the fluid to bypass the outflow obstruction and then drain out of the eye into a ‘bleb’. Later, an anti-scarring agent is used to prevent closure of the new pathway. This procedure is very effective for treating glaucoma, but it does come with a longer recovery time. It is usually done in cases of moderate to advanced glaucoma.

Glaucoma Drainage Devices (GDDs): A glaucoma drainage device is a small tube that is surgically placed in your eye to help drain excess fluid. This creates a new pathway for the fluid to leave the eye, thus reducing the intraocular pressure.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS): MIGS is a modern, less invasive surgery option for early to moderate glaucoma. It uses a micro-stent that gets implanted into the drainage canal to improve the eye’s natural drainage system. With smaller incisions and faster recovery times, MIGS is a great choice for patients looking for effective glaucoma treatment with minimal downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the early signs of glaucoma?

Answer: Glaucoma generally does not have obvious symptoms in the early stage. However, as it progresses, people may experience blurry vision, loss of side vision, bad night vision, and seeing halos around lights.
Answer: Glaucoma is diagnosed through eye exams. Some of the tests include eye pressure measurement, optic nerve evaluation, visual field testing, and imaging scans. If you have a family history of glaucoma, regular eye screenings are advisable.
Answer: Depending on the severity, treatment includes eye drops, laser therapy, or surgery. While glaucoma cannot be cured, an early detection and treatment can slow its progression and help preserve vision.
Answer: No, glaucoma can not be prevented completely. However, regular eye exams can help detect it early. The common risk factors that cause glaucoma are high blood pressure, diabetes, and eye injuries. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the chances of developing severe glaucoma.
