Eye Tracking Exercises

Eye Tracking Exercises train your eyes to move smoothly and accurately while observing a moving object. They help improve reading efficiency, sports performance, and overall visual coordination. They achieve this by reducing issues like skipping lines or losing place while reading.

  • Observe a moving object: Follow a small object, such as a pen or pencil, as it moves in different directions.
  • Look at a swinging pendulum: Make your eyes follow a swinging pendulum.
  • Echo reading: Track words on a page as they are read aloud.
  • Word searches: Look for a particular letter or for only vowels.
Eye Tracking Exercises

Focusing Techniques

Focusing Techniques make your eyes shift focus between objects at different distances. This strengthens your eye muscles responsible for near and far vision adjustments. They reduce eye strain, and enhance clarity and visual flexibility for tasks like reading, driving, or working on digital screens.

  • Pencil push-up: Hold a pencil close to your nose, slowly bringing it closer to your eyes till you start seeing double. Then, slowly move it away, taking care the pencil remains single.
  • Thumb focusing: With your thumb at arm's length, focus on it. Then, quickly shift your gaze to a far-away object. Repeat the exercise.

Binocular Vision Training

Binocular Vision Training Exercises include focusing techniques that improve the ability of your eyes to switch focus between near and far objects. They also strengthen coordination between both eyes. It helps reduce double vision, eye strain, and difficulties with tracking or alignment issues.

  • Brock string: Take a string with beads at different distances. Focus on each bead one by one. This helps with eye alignment and convergence.
  • Reading progression: Read text with different sizes and spacing. Try to focus on smooth eye movements and tracking.

Depth Perception Training

Depth Perception Training improves your brain’s ability to interpret 3D spatial relationships. It helps with tasks that require precise hand-eye coordination, such as catching a ball, driving, or judging distances accurately.

  • 20-20-20 rule: After every 20 minutes of near work, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Imagine eights: Form an imaginary number 8 in the air for 30 seconds, then change directions.
  • Around the world: Look up & down, left & right, and top left & top right.
  • Barrel card: Shift your focus between red and green targets on a card.

Computer-Assisted Vision Therapy

Computer-Assisted Vision Therapy involves the use of digital exercises that provide real-time feedback - to improve eye coordination. It is an enjoyable advanced vision therapy technique.

  • Eg. 1: To enable your eyes to distinguish objects from their background, the computer screen displays an array of shapes. You have to point out a particular shape, say a triangle, hidden among other shapes in a cluttered space.
  • Eg. 2: To strengthen your eyes’ ability to focus together on a near object, the computer shows an image moving towards you. You have to keep both eyes focused on the target. If the target diverges or your eyes have difficulty maintaining focus, the computer gives feedback.
