What is LASIK Eye Surgery?

Refractive Eye Surgery

Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis or LASIK is a laser eye surgery designed to correct vision by reshaping the cornea. An irregularly shaped cornea causes refractive errors or vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. LASIK surgery uses precise laser technology to reshape the cornea. This allows the light entering the eye to get focused correctly on the retina - thereby improving vision. The amount of corneal tissue reshaped during LASIK is based on the patient's eyeglass prescription, the shape of their cornea, etc.

How LASIK Works

Initial Preparation

  • Most LASIK surgeries take just around 30 minutes or fewer.
  • As the procedure begins, you are made to lie down comfortably in a reclining chair.
  • Numbing eye drops are used to ensure you experience no discomfort.
  • An instrument is used to keep your eyes open during the procedure.

Flap Creation

  • A suction ring is placed on your eye before the creation of the corneal flap. You may experience slight pressure and dimmed vision.
  • A microkeratome blade (in traditional LASIK) or a femtosecond laser (in modern LASIK surgeries) is used to create a small ultra-thin circular hinged flap.
  • The flap is lifted to expose the underlying eye tissue for treatment (reshaping).

Corneal Reshaping

  • A computer-guide excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea. Each laser pulse removes microscopic pieces of the corneal tissue.
  • Once reshaping is done, the flap is gently put back into place. It works as a natural bandage to protect the reshaped underlying parts of the cornea.
  • The flap typically heals on its own. No stitches are needed.

LASIK/Laser Surgeries at Sohana Hospital

Wavelight Plus InnovEyes

Wavelight Plus InnovEyes is the world’s 1st AI+ray-tracing LASIK. This specs removal surgery corrects refractive errors such as myopia (up to -11D) and astigmatism ( up to -4.57D) along with all optical irregularities. This advanced procedure involves mapping 1,00,000+ data points on the eye to create a virtual 3D Digital Eye Twin - this allows for 100% personalised treatment for each unique eye.

SMILE Pro

SMILE Pro is an advanced AI+robotic specs removal surgery. The procedure is completely flapless and takes just 9 seconds (per eye). It involves the creation and extraction of a lens-shaped disc or lenticule to reshape the cornea and correct refractive errors like myopia (up to -10D) and astigmatism (up to -5D).

Contoura Vision

Contoura Vision is a topography-guided LASIK eye surgery that corrects complex refractive errors (myopia up to -9D and astigmatism up to -3D). This procedure corrects corneal aberrations and irregularities as well by mapping more than 22,000 unique elevation points on the eye’s surface. This personalised procedure is ideal for people looking to get enhanced clarity without any halos or glare.

Femto LASIK

Femto LASIK is an upgraded version of conventional LASIK. Unlike the traditional surgery, this version of LASIK does not use a blade to create the corneal flap. Instead, a femtosecond laser is employed for flap creation, followed by the reshaping of the cornea. Femto LASIK effectively corrects refractive errors like myopia up to -12D, hyperopia up to +6D, and astigmatism up to ±6D.

PRK

Photorefractive Keratectomy, or PRK, is also a type of laser eye surgery. This procedure corrects complex refractive conditions like myopia (up to -12D) and astigmatism (up to -3D) without the creation of a corneal flap. Instead, the epithelium (the outer layer of the cornea) is removed to reshape the cornea and facilitate clear vision.
