How LASIK Works

Initial Preparation

  • Most LASIK surgeries take just around 30 minutes or fewer.
  • As the procedure begins, you are made to lie down comfortably in a reclining chair.
  • Numbing eye drops are used to ensure you experience no discomfort.
  • An instrument is used to keep your eyes open during the procedure.

Flap Creation

  • A suction ring is placed on your eye before the creation of the corneal flap. You may experience slight pressure and dimmed vision.
  • A microkeratome blade (in traditional LASIK) or a femtosecond laser (in modern LASIK surgeries) is used to create a small ultra-thin circular hinged flap.
  • The flap is lifted to expose the underlying eye tissue for treatment (reshaping).

Corneal Reshaping

  • A computer-guide excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea. Each laser pulse removes microscopic pieces of the corneal tissue.
  • Once reshaping is done, the flap is gently put back into place. It works as a natural bandage to protect the reshaped underlying parts of the cornea.
  • The flap typically heals on its own. No stitches are needed.
